““If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.” (Jesus in John 14:15)
I read this when I was in college and believed with all my heart that to demonstrate love to God I had to do everything He told me to do in the Bible. Well, that was quite a long list of to do and to not do! It was truly exhausting for many years.
Then came Freedom! In the first video lesson of the course, Pastor Chris Hodges shared his revelation that the verse means something very different than what I had determined. He said the key is to figure out which side of the comma you’re on. Are you in love with Jesus? Then you’ll keep His commandments because of love, not striving or working for them. It was as if I heard the verse for the first time. I had been living on the wrong side of the comma! I had been trying to do His commandments to prove I loved God instead of falling in love with God and letting obedience flow out of relationship. Wow. Stop and think about that.
Which side of the comma are you on?
